    Alternatives to the Caffeine Crawl

I’ve been pretty tired lately. Between Script Frenzy and some big personal projects, I’m working a lot, and thinking even more. Staying alert has necessitated a sizable influx of caffeine, and I’m stockpiling my supply like a fiend.

But today marked a decidedly low moment, as I actually reheated some coffee we brewed in the office last week. We’re talking at least four days old and cold as the rock at one of those weird ice cream mix-in places. Sad as it was, I needed the quick fix to get through my afternoon.

Help me, folks. I know that us Wrimos and Frenziers love our caffeine, but what other energizing wake-up methods did you make use of this past month? How do you non-chemically spur yourself on through a marathon writing session—or just a marathon work day?

    Writer Fuel: Salad

Today I’d like to ponder an oft-overlooked but rife-with-potential dish: the salad.

    That’s right, I said it.

I’m not talking about your run-of-the-mill, floppy iceberg lettuce and mealy tomato accompaniment. I’m talking about a glorious, multi-textured, ingredient-bonanza.

I have long respected the versatility of salads, and devote one night a week to making an epically large and experimental salad for dinner, and frequently bring a bag of ingredients to work for a custom lunch creation. What a mid-day treat!

Here are some of my favorites:

    Writer Fuel: Mexican Hot Chocolate

Need help tackling that rewrite? This tasty drink will give you the boost you need to help you get started. The following recipe makes about two over-sized mugs of hot chocolatey delight.

    Ingredients:

    • One tablet of Mexican chocolate (Abuelita, Morelia or Carlos V) broken into smaller pieces.
    • 3 cups of milk (skim, 1%, 2%, or whole milk all work)
    • ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon (optional)
    • A pinch of salt (optional)
    • Mini marshmallows (optional)
    • Brown sugar (optional)
    • Cinnamon sticks
    • Whipped cream

Writer Fuel: Spinach and Tofu Shake

Now, now. Don’t make that face! Hear me out.

Best (healthiest, most protein-packed!) shake ever:

    • yogurt (fruit or plain, full-fat or nonfat—your choice!)
    • frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are all great)
    • and/or fresh fruit (peaches are in season and they are yum!)
    • 1 banana
    • a handful of spinach (I add two!)
    • 1 serving of tofu (roughly 1/5 of a container)
    • a splash of milk or orange juice (or even water! The more liquid you add, the less thick it will be.)

Our fabulous Community Liaison Sarah Mackey shared this recipe with me. (Thanks, Sarah!) I fully recognize that it sounds repulsive, but you can’t judge a shake by its ingredients. This is so delicious that it’s more like a sinful treat than anything I’d ever brand as health food. And it more than fills me up until lunchtime, giving me the protein I need to karate chop site bugs and write pep for our participants!

What is your favorite delicious recipe with unexpected ingredients?

    Writer Fuel: Good Old-Fashioned Soup

When I have a cold (as I do now) or the weather’s not so great (as it’s been lately), there’s nothing more comforting than a bowl of steaming hot soup. I have been sampling plenty of soup this past week, and realized that it also makes great writer fuel. Unlike a burrito or sandwich, soup is actually ideal for eating while seated at the computer. It only requires one hand, little-to-no napkin interaction, and can be consumed at whatever rate is most conducive to your writing. (Bite, type, ponder, bite, type type type, ponder, bite bite bite. Or some combination thereof.)

The other wondrous feature of soup—and my subject today—is how very diverse it can be. I’ve had soup every day this week, which may sound dreadfully boring. But one was a spicy coconut, one was a classic chicken and vegetable, and today was a delightful barley and mushroom (see picture). Oh, the many flavors!

In honor of soup and all it’s comforting, sustaining, and delicious variations, I wanted to share with you my top five favorite homemade soups. (In addition to making me happy, soup also makes me nostalgic.)

Rest! And drink lots of tea!

I’ve been out sick the last few days and I notice I’m not hearing the usual advice: rest and drink lots of tea. Rest, yes, but no one reminds me of the other because since I stopped drinking coffee (more than a month ago!), I’m down to two drinks—water and tea, that’s it. I don’t drink juice, I don’t touch soda. I don’t drink anything that comes with a warning label. My biggest vice these days is a hot chocolate or a chai (made with soy—I’m also trying to live kinder, like my sweet friends over at The Kind Life), but in my sick haze, I wondered if I’ve been depriving myself. I started craving the cure-all of my childhood, Top Ramen and a Coke, so I removed my sick self from the care of good Doctors Pekoe and Smokey and their amazing patented Crush Therapy long enough to get to the kitchen and open this drawer:

Writer Fuel: Baked Macaroni and Cheese

I have been in serious need of writer fuel lately, as I have been working on my MFA thesis, which is a collection of short stories. As readers of this blog know, I am a big fan of sweet things. Dessert food just seems to go with writing better than any other food. (Maybe it’s just the sugar?) But every now and then I get a craving for the ultimate savory comfort food: mac ‘n’ cheese. So I baked up a batch last weekend, and have been living on it for the past week. Must be great writer fuel because I managed to finish up 180 pages, and submit the first draft of the thesis yesterday.

Here’s my favorite mac ‘n’ cheese recipe, and be sure to share your own in the comments!

    Cats! Cats! Cats!

I live with two sisters, called by the folks at the Milo Foundation (who found them in an alley when they were infants), a “bonded pair.” At my house, these sisters are called Pekoe and Smokey, and they are the resident cats. In the two years I’ve been lucky enough to live with them, they’ve polarized, as siblings have a tendency to do.

Pekoe, whose name rhymes appropriately with Freak-O, hunts things like potted plants, Santa hats, and single blueberries, and drags them through the cat door. Pekoe lives to explore. Smokey, also known as The Smoke Monster, hunts laps and purrs them into submission. For Smokey, it’s all about cuddling up in front of a roaring television.

Despite these differences, they love each other, and despite the occasional dramatic hiss-fest, they don’t forget it. Similarly, I have four brothers and we definitely have had the occasional dramatic hiss-fest over the years, but when it comes down to it, which it does often, they are an inspiration to me. Alright, so sometimes that inspiration begins as frustration, but just as Smokey can appreciate the comforts of the couch knowing Pekoe is off in a tree somewhere, I can slip into my writing cubby knowing that my bros are holding up their end of the deal and our family is thriving in its own polarized-yet-bonded way. My brothers remind me why I’m here and all the many important reasons to keep showing up at the page.

In the heart of the Frenzy, or any writing adventure, this is excellent information to have! How do you share your writing hopes and dreams (and needs and boundaries!) with your loved ones? How do they inspire/frustrate your writing? Most importantly, how do they remind you of cats?

    Writer Fuel: The Thunder

Here at NaNoWriMo HQ, we are known for our frequent and sustained coffee consumption.

What I’m about to tell you doesn’t at all compromise my abiding love for coffee, but it may still come as a shock.

I am way into tea. There, I said it.

I drink roughly 60-80 ounces of tea a day, thanks to the giant sample mug that lives on my desk right alongside my assorted boxes of tea.

My very favorite tea of all, though, is one that YWP Director, and my podmate, Chris Angotti refers to as “The Thunder.”

What is about this tea that makes my day?

    Writer Fuel: Apple Blackberry Crumble

I have a story due on Tuesday, which I’ve been procrastinating on for way too long, but I finally hunkered down this weekend and finished it. But of course, not without a little writer fuel to keep my brain going. I received a cookbook for Christmas called Cooking with Apples and Pears (by Laura Washburn) and it’s turned out to be one of the best cookbooks I’ve ever had! This recipe comes from there and I can’t recommend it enough. Perfect with vanilla ice cream!
